Taskbar overloaded with startup programs

I've installed a number of programs on my XP computer that have created
startup programs that load automatically when XP starts up. They slow my
system way down while loading and create a mess on the lower right side of my
taskbar.

I know how to used msconfig.exe and the startup tab to edit the settings,
but short of uninstalling the entire programs that have caused this problem,
is there another way to to find and remove these unwanted startups?

Thanks in advance, and thanks also for the excellent responses that I have
gotten on several other questions I have posted the last couple of weeks.

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't want
to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup.
The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup
folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

usually in the right click menu for each icon there is a properties/settings opton wehre you cah disable running at startup.
that would be the first attack direction.
if that fails then msconfig or editing RUN line in registry.

usually during in install the program asks if you want it to run at startup. be careful in the future and NOT check that box.
