Taskbar buttons odd behaviour

L

Li'l Roberto

If I have several windows open using the same program - excel for
example, and I minimize them all, I only have one button showing on the
taskbar [which is what I like, "group similar taskbar buttons" is
selected in Taskbar properties] .

However for the past few days it is only possible to maximize the
last window that had focus, the only way to open one of the other
windows is to goto the Window menu of the maximised one and select
it from the list.

I used to be able to simply right click on the Taskbar button and
choose which ever window to maximise /restore, also close group is no
longer displayed as a right click option.
Deselecting "group similar taskbar buttons" doesn't change the
behaviour, a fix would be appreciated.

Try resetting the Taskbar to XP Default:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

You may also want to check your focus options/settings:

Customize Auto Hide Taskbar Settings (Line 190) Right hand side

Programs May Start, Quit, Lose, and Gain Focus Randomly

Prevent Programs from Stealing Focus - Undo (Line 66)

When a window that does not have focus is updated by its program, the
default setting prevents it from becoming the foremost (top) window,
instead, it flashes in the taskbar.

thanks for the links , I tried the first one-
Customize Auto Hide Taskbar Settings (Line 190) Right hand side, however
that didn't resolve the issue.
Thinking back two things have changed before this started
1. installed KB867801, so I rolled the system back to prior - no change
2. installed Office XP SP3 - could this be the culprit ?.

Call me a wooz, but I am always reluctant to install 3rd party "fixes"
if I can find the answer from within MS software itself.
Do you have any other thoughts ? if not maybe I should go down the
hall to the Office helpdesk

here is an update, problem fixed ! but with the following nice feature -
now there is a count of the number of windows minimised in red next
to the application's icon, this was never there before.

Here's my fix: tools menu > options... > check mark in "Windows in
Taskbar" [some of my spreadsheets didn't have the check mark, some
did]

You are confusing me......you previously stated that group similar taskbar
buttons was selected.

did.

Where? Which tool menu? Which program?

That's correct, group similar taskbar buttons selected or not, I had the
problem.

For the fix as described I was referring to the tools menu from an
open spreadsheet
Tools > Options... > View tab, does that make more sense ?.

By placing a check in the "Windows in Taskbar box the
taskbar button behaviour returned to the way it was previous.
