You may receive an “0x80070005: Access is denied" error message when
you create a scheduled task on a Windows XP-based computer after you
install security update 841873

All I did is google the problem, never had it myself. I just read the
pages & basically it is saying, do all your MS updates including SP3.

Hi John
I think I must be missing something. Could you tell me where it is saying
"do all your MS updates including SP3"?
I have SP3 installed and still have the problem.

lines.

access denied.

Just had a quick check of the google pages Bill, did you see these?

0x80070005: Access is denied. You do not have permission to perform the
requested operation.
Click Start, Run and type Gpedit.msc to bring up the Group Policy
editor. In the Local Computer Policy list, expand Computer
Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies.
Click on "User Rights Assignment" and double click "Access this
computer from the network" and then click Add User or Group. Add the
the user name or the group name in the Enter the object names to select
area.
Click Check Names to verify what you selected and click OK twice to
exit.
Or,
Try, Start > Run, copy & paste > regedit and press > Enter. If you get
a message denying you the access, then your system is probably
infected.
Have a look at Windows Explorer. On the menu bar, if you don't see any
folder option but another menu item something called: "Advanced Task
Scheduler" etc, then it's confirmed that your system is infected.
Or,
Start > Help and Support, copy & paste > Advanced Task Scheduler into
Search & press > Enter.
Set security on the Task. If the Task Properties does not have a
security tab, add a check next to "Run only if logged in" and that will
disable the password & the task should run.

Thanks John for the extra info.
Had a look at the three fixes.I had seen the first one before.

1. Don't have Gpedit.msc on computer.
2. Can access regedit OK and Advanced Task Scheduler doesn't show in Windows
Explorer.
3. I tried this and it works to a limited degree. At the scheduled time the
System Restore window opens but the program doesn't run. I have to manually
start it.

Another one I saw Bill, was to disable your anti virus & see if it
works.

No Gpedit.msc, use google to find another way.

Here are some starters.

Just spotted your other problems Bill, may all be linked.

I would turn off system restore, update Malwarebytes & run again.
Now Reboot.

Download these 2 programs, update & Run. Reboot.

Bill, just in case you don't know what System Restore does
automatically.
http://qdeo.com/ne1
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html
These healthy system checkpoints are created without prompting or
intervention from the user the first time the computer is started after
Windows XP is installed and, by default, on a daily basis after that.
You can also manually create restore points.

Some useful info there. Going to work my way through it all.
Bill

PS have just turned off System Restore and then turned on again. All
previous restore points have been deleted and a new system checkpoint
created automatically as it should .

Hi BH
I don't know if you are still following this thread, but I had the same
problem as you and I think I have it sorted (with a lot of help from Johnw)

If you are running WinXP home with SP3 then the fix is already included on
your system.

Try this:-

Start/Control Panel/Scheduled Tasks and select "Add Scheduled Task"
This starts the Wizard, click Next
Scroll down the list until you come to the program you want to start. As a
test just select Calculator.Then Next.
As a test select "one time only". Then Next
Select the time and date . When you do it select a few minutes in the
future.Then Next.
Your user name will probably be already in the first space.
Leave the next two spaces blank i.e. no password. Then Next
Put a check in "Open Advanced Properties" and click finish.
You will get that warning again.Just hit OK.
In the next window put a check in "Run only if logged on" and click apply.
Close Task Scheduler and hopefully Calculator will appear on your Desktop.

It works for me ,hope it works for you.

Regards Bill
