Task Scheduler doesn't work

D

Dana

W2K pro 5.00.2195 SP4 AMD 512ram
Discovered today that the Task Scheduler doesn't work -
and hasn't, apparently, since 10/26/02 - at least that's
the last time it says Symantec NetDetect ran. When the
update wasn't working automatically, I had assumed it was
an NAV problem, so had been running it manually. It now
says "Could not start"

I scheduled Calculator, per test examples - it does not
open on system start-up, but says it is running.

A new program installed that must run on schedule doesn't
run - says "Could not start" ( which is how I discovered
the problem).

I tried to do a View Log, per Help suggestions, but it
says "The file contains control characters and may be a
binary file. Do you wish to open this file in hexadecimal
mode?" Whether clicking on Yes or No, it results in I/O
error 32 and nothing shows up in Notepad.

The Last Result column for all tasks but one say 0x0; the
Symantec task says 0x65.

Is there any fairly simple or safe way to fix Scheduled
Tasks? Or is there any utility that can run in its place?

Thanks in advance.

This may help.

Thanks, Dave - but the problem is I cannot open the View
Log, as your linked page says to do. As I mentioned, the
following happens --

I tried to do a View Log, per Help suggestions, but it
says "The file contains control characters and may be a
binary file. Do you wish to open this file in hexadecimal
mode?" Whether clicking on Yes or No, it results in I/O
error 32 and nothing shows up in Notepad.

So I do not get to the errors. How does one open a file
in "hexadecimal mode" - and then read it? And why doesn't
my View Log open in Notepad the way the Help and KB
articles say they should?

I'm still at a loss.

The file may be corrupt. Try stopping the Task Scheduler service and delete
(or move) the file
%windir%\SchedLgU.Txt

I did that, Dave. But nothing changes - same message when
trying to view the log - and the replacement file is there.

You might try removing all tasks , delete %windir%\SchedLgU.Txt file again,
then before recreating any tasks verify that you can view the empty log
file.

Hooray - one piece of the puzzle solved - it occurred to
me that perhaps because a shareware program I use -
Another Notepad - had made itself the default notepad,
that might be the cause of the Logs not being viewable. So
I went to the original log file (I had moved it rather
than deleting), right-clicked and opened in Windows
Notepad - and Voila! - Here are the logs --

From a command prompt;
assoc .txt
should return with
..txt=txtfile
if not
assoc .txt=txtfile
to restore the default file type association.

ftype txtfile
should return with
txtfile=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
if not
ftype txtfile=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
to restore the default open action for the file type

Thanks, Dave - I now have Windows Notepad back as the
default. The View Log opens, but is blank (I did not move
the original file back.)

However, apparently that was not the cause of the tasks
not running. They still don't. Again, my test Calculator
says it is running, but it does not open when logging on.
The other tasks still do not run. Is there anything else?
Or am I restricted forever to running these tasks manually?

Appreciate your help,

Dana

Well I knew this wasn't any fix other than to get it so you can once again
view the log file for trouble shooting purposes. According to your old log
the last entry was 12/18/2003 1:05:06 PM

Also from the log it appears this may apply

SP4 - I was afraid of that. I also cannot print from DOS
(I use Arclist, a dos program), and was told on this MS NG
that it was because of SP4, and that I would need to
uninstall it - but the requirement to backup or mess with
the registry scared me off.) I also have an XP-HE laptop,
which prints in DOS fine, so I move the files over there
just to print. But, alas, that is not a work-around for
this new program, or obviously, Symantec.

What is involved with uninstalling SP4 - considering that
other hotfixes have been done since? I tried to find out
when the SP4 was installed (to see if it might be the same
date as the last successful scheduled task), but it
doesn't show a date in the Add/Remove programs.

Not sure I follow. Are you saying you installed, removed and re-installed
SP4? This articles may also help.

No - I installed it only once - but Hostfixes since then.
I installed the Dos program after SP4 also, and when I
could not print from Dos, even after all kinds of
recommended testing (it says it prints, but it never gets
to the printers - and printers are installed OK because I
use them from Windows every day).

It is possible that I installed SP4 around the time the
task scheduler quit working - is there any way to find the
date of the SP4 install?

Sorry for the confusion.

If you chose the backup option at the time of the service pack install then
you can check the date/time stamp on then
%windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$
directory. Either case according to the article you may need this hotfix.
Call them and mention the article ID for the free fix.

The date/time stamp on the SP uninstall is Saturday,
August 4, 2002 10:29:03pm - so I guess that's not the
problem with the task scheduler, because it says Symantec
last ran successfully 10/26/2002 at 10:07:00pm. But thank
you for the information; I will check into the fix to see
if it might solve any of my problems.
