Task Pane Toolbar

I have already searched Word Help on this issue. I would like to turn off
the Task Pane Toolbar at Startup so that it does not appear when I open
documents or Word. The Help instructions said to close all Word docs and go
to Tools>Options. However, Options is greyed out and inaccessible to me. Is
there another way? Any assistance would be welcome.
