Task Manager

When I press CTRL ALT DEL to access taskmgr.exe, all that appears is my users
tab giving me the option to disconnect or log myself off. NO OTHER options
appear. The normal task manager screen appears using any other profile on my
pc. Any ideas how I can get my task manager normal screen back as default?

shamwari,

Not sure I understood the post but ...

Is is a limitted user account under which you are running into problems with TaskManager?
Make sure to set up the right policies for that user account (registry or gpedit.exe).
E.g.,
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System],"DisableTaskMgr"
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System],"DisableLockWorkstation"
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System],"DisableChangePassword"

Hi KM,

Many thanks - the account concerned is the pc admin account, and other
non-administrator limited accounts get the normal Task Manager app while all
my main admin acc. gets is this limited one-tab "Disconnect User" window.
I'm not that technical and suspect attempts to edit the registry might
compound the problem, but willing to try. The fact remains - if a program
freezes, and I want to "End Task" through Task Manager on my admin account,
all I get is a useless tiny window with "Disconnect User" or "Logoff", which
doesn't help. I just want the normal Task Manager screen back - please help!

shamwari,

First of all, it will be really hard to help you out if you are not able to change registry on the device.

Also, the mention of "Disconnect User" led me to believe you are referring to RDP session. Do you connect to your target device
remotely?

Hi KM,

No probs, I could edit registry if need be. I'm not connecting remotely at
all, if you look at your standard task manager window, the far right tab is
"Users", with "Disconnect" or "Logoff" as options below it, in addition to
the other tabs of "Programs", "Performance" etc - well in my case all the
rest have disappeared leaving only the "Users" tab behind, effectively losing
me all the extra functionality from Task Manager on my PC admin account,
where the limited accounts still have it as normal. If a program freezes, I
have to reboot now rather than pressing CTRL ALT DEL and choosing "End
Program", because that task option just doesn't exist, only the disconnect
user option.

shamwari,

I see. I misunderstood your original question. I thought you're referring to Gina screen (Ctrl-Alt-Del).

I don't know why Task Manager pages can disappear. Especially for an admin account. Doesn't make any sense to me. I don't know of
any policy setting that may affect the page appearance in TaskMgr.
The only Users page is dynamic in XP Task Manager. Its appearance depends on the Terminal Service existence and a check for a single
user account env.

Just in case, get the taskmgr launched through Dependency Walker (Profiling feature) to see if anything is missing from your image.

As a workaround to the "End Process" you can always use command line tools like PsKill (www.sysinternal.com)

Hi.

Try this:
Double click on the border of Task Manager (NOT this which is using to resize, but inside)
OR
Enter in the "Run program..." dialog box from Menu Start this text:
taskmgr.exe
and press simultaneously CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ENTER.

Please, answer if this help.
