task manager problem

My computer frequently runs very slowly. I looked at the task manager processes tab while this was happening, and it said that the computer was running approximately 100 taskmgr.exe programs! How can I stop this from happening?

Hi Erin
The task manager Processes list will show both System and user-installed
memory resident applications. For most xp users there will be many system
processes running in the background and this is correct. It's important NOT
to stop processes from the task manager list itself if you're not certain
what you're doing.

Some user installed applications will default to running in the background
100% of the time even if you don't need them to.
In the first case check the system tray (at the right end of the taskbar),
this usually contains icons for each third-party piece of software. Open the
configuration/options window for unnecessary applications and try to find
ways of preventing them running on windows startup. If there's no
configurable option then check your Startup folder to see if you can delete
them from there.
There is also a section in the registry that forces certain programs to run
on startup, but again you shouldn't think of editing this unless you're sure
what your doing.
