Task Manager problem!

Guest

After booting up my PC about 2 weeks ago, i pushed Ctrl + Alt + Del only to
find that Task Manager had been 'restricted by my administrator'. How do i
actually lift this restriction? I am an administrator myself of my pc and I
can't find anything that might help me!

Pls help, mucho appreciated

Funny, I was working on an article for the site about that. Here's the
content - you can see it before it's even uploaded. <g>

When you attempt to open the task manager you either get notice that the
task manager has been disabled or the process closes completely. This is
problem is often caused by malware, by disabling the task manager they
basically prevent you from easily disabling hidden processes. Just because
you clean up this particular symptom doesn't mean that your system is then
clean. For more information on cleaning malware from your system see:

Malware Cleaners and Repair:

Solution:

Windows XP Professional Edition® or Windows 2000:

1.. Press the Start button
2.. Click on Run
3.. Type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes)
4.. Press Enter or click Okay
5.. In the Group Policy window:
a.. Select User Configuration
b.. Select Administrative Templates
c.. Select System
d.. Select CTRL+ALT+DEL Options
e.. Double click Remove Task Manager*
f.. Set that to Not Configured
6. Click Okay
7. Exit the Group Policy window

Windows XP Home Edition®:**

1.. Press the Start button
2.. Click on Run
3.. Type "regedit" (without the quotes)?
4.. Press Enter or click Okay
5.. When your registry editor opens up dig down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
6. Find (or create)*** the DWORD value of DisableTaskMgr (note the exact
case)
7. Right click on the value and either create or change it's hexadecimal
value.

A value of 1 means Enabled (which actually disables the task manager).
A value of 0 means Disabled (which actually enables the task manager).

* By setting the group policy to be not configured it is removing the
restrictions from the task manager.
** For those people wishing to lock their system down to prevent kids or
other users from using the task manager the method to disable the task
manager is also given. Windows XP Pro users would just configure the GP and
call it good. XP Home Edition users need to make a key.
*** To make a the DWORD value, first navigate to the appropriate branch,
highlight it, click on Edit, click on New, and select DWORD value and follow
the above directions.

? Just so you know editing the registry isn't the brightest thing to do
though many of us do it all the time. However, you have been warned. For a
better warning:
http://kgiii.info/windows/all/general/regedit_warn.html

Before you do this it would be wise of you to right click in the left-hand
pane on the appropriate branch and selecting the "export" option to save it
to a safe location so that you might restore it.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
