Task Manager not closing programs

There are certain programs that do not close after which
I close them out. For instance, I may have had several
windows of Explorer opened. I may close them all out,
even after waiting a few minutes I may goto Task Manager
and still see 5-6 iexplorer.exe still open. Any help
appreciated. Samething happens sometimes with Media
Player will close it out, then go back to it later by
double clicking on a file that uses media player only for
it not to open, but when I go to TASK manager, the player
is still open, but not open on my task bar.

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2003 using updated virus definitions) show?
