Task going to desired category?

I have 8 categories set up in my calendar. When I create a task it always
goes into the first category.
Is there a way to be able to select / tell it where to go without having to
let it go to the first category and then drag it to where I want it to go?

Is there a reason you're not picking the category using the Categories button at the lower right corner of the task form?

,I could do it that way, but I'm entering the info from the "direct entry
area"

(Not sure what you call the area at the top where you can type in your info
w/o going to the task form.)

It would seem like when you got over to the field for category there would
be a drop down box or something or you could rt click to select.

Is the form the only way to go?

If you use that method of entering and display the Categories field, you should be able to type in the name of the desired category. If you want to pick from a list, after you create the item, right-click it and choose Categories.

I need to clarify this a bit. I am doing this in the "Task" area.. Not the
Calendar.
Sorry...

Thanks... however when I get to the category field and rt click (empty or
not) the box that pops up (not a drop down box) just says paste or select
all. There is not choice of category (not even grayed out)

I can type in the category name manually and it will go where it is supposed
to but if I have a long name or make a typo then... well that's why I was
hoping to find an alternative to the manual way.

Right-click the icon for the item to see the popup menu that contans the Categories command. If you right-click in an editable cell, you get a different context menu.

Sorry this is taking so long and I REALLY appreciate the help...
Here's what I see on my task list "entry area"
I have columns for Subject, Status, etc, etc, Categories.
When I'm at the category column there isn't an icon to click on. Just the
title of the field.

I'm not sure what icon you are menaing when you say the "icon for the item"

You need to right-click on any column in the view that is not an editable text field. Status should work.

Regardless of which column I right click on there is never an option to do
anything with categories.

What do you see on the context menu when you right-click in the column for status? The menu should start with Open, Print, etc.

When I right click the column titled "categories" I get:
Sort Ascending
Sort Decending
Group this field
(these are grayed out) then I have:
Group by Box - this is selectable
Etc

The only place that I get an "Open, Print" option is if I right click on a
Category that is already in the task area that has tasks in it. There I get..
Open select items
Print
etc

This is Outlook 2000
