Once I have a half dozen or so apps loaded and their associated icons on the
task bar, is there any way to move them around on the task bar? Thanks.

The apps on the task bar appear in the order the apps are opened. The only
way of changing the order is to close the apps and then open them in the
order you want them to appear.
 
As MI5 3/4 says, it's the order they are opened in, BUT there are 3rd
party utilites that provide for "swapping things around" do a search on
google for taskbar managers or the like. Also if you get undesired side
effects or errors, remove the utility.
