Task bar at bottom not showing what programs I have open

When you have programs open in Windows XP, you should see bars at the bottom
on the task bar that shows what programs you have open but I'm not getting
them. It just started a few days ago. I right clicked on the task bar and
looks at the toolbars that I have open and the only one checked is the quick
launch bar. I even tried a system restore with no luck. I can see the start
button and the blue bar across the bottom of the screen but I can't see any
of the bars of the the programs I have open. I have to use "alt" "tab" just
to see what I have open. Anyone got any ideas?

If the "blue bar" spans from the Start button to the Systray then you may
have the QL stretched.
Right click the Taskbar and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" if it is checked.
Place your pointer over the Separator | bar so it becomes a double pointer.
Drag it back towards the Start button.
Relock the Taskbar if you wish.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem as CAD dude. It also just started a
short time ago. Brian's solution does not work. Even if you unlock the
taskbar and stretch the seperator, the active applications do not appear. The
odd thing is this symptom comes an goes, with no apparent cause. For example,
this morning I powered-up my notebook, as I normally do, and the applications
appear on the task bar. I did a shut down (not a restart) and powered back
up. Now they don't appear.
