tape not recognized in drive

Hi, I've got a Dell Poweredge 2600 which doesn't recognise when a new
dat tape has been manually inserted. When a new tape is inserted the
tape drive state continues to show 'empty'. This server has SP4
installed. A cleaning tape has been inserted on a number of occasions.
I have read Kb article 327559. As a last resort I swapped a tape drive
from another Poweredge 2600 which was working ok, however the tape
recognition problem continues, any ideas?

Welcome to the real world,

NTBackup in 2000 seems to be a big problem since SP2. I have about 30 sites
taking backup every night and atleast 3-5 sites have this problem every day.
Sites with SP 1 or no SP seems to be better. We use Windows 2000 server Eng
and standard single tape drives.

The solution is to manually do an 'Inventory' on the drive like this:
* Right click 'My Computer' and 'Manage'
* go down to 'Removable Storage' and 'Physical Locations'
* right click your tape drive and select 'Inventory'

Article Q267574 may help a bit, but not all the way.

HTH

Regards,
Jan

Better make this clear before someone points it out

The "welcome to the real world" is an ironic greeting and like a desperate
cry for help from my side and should not to be considered as rude. I had
aloooot of backup problems and is pretty feed up.
