Taking ownership of files.

Tad

I deleted myself from the user list and need to access my
data. How do I take ownership of these files? I have been
told I can do this but I can't seem to find the way TO do
this. I need specifics as I am somewhat of a win2k
imbecile. Thanks in advance.

What "user list?" To take ownership, you need to go into the properties of
the file(s), click on Security tab>>Advanced button>>Ownership tab and
select the account or group you want to own the file(s). However, you may
not be able to do this unless you have administrator permissions.

Log on as "the" local administrator or as a user that is also in the
administrators group and try to access the files. If you can not, then you
will first need to take ownership [as described in link below for XP pro]
which allows you to change permissions to grant your self access. You can
access a folder/files permissions by selecting properties/security. You want
to give yourself full permissions as an administrator. If the permissions
are grayed out, then select the advanced tab and unselect allow permissions
to be inherited [first checkbox] and select the copy option when another
screen pops up. --- Steve

worry about disabling simple file sharing as it does not apply to Windows
2000.
