Table of Contents in W2007

Gus

I am running Vista and using Microsoft Office 2007 - Word
I limited a large document to using only the 3 heading styles, heading1, 2
and 3.
Using Table of Contents inbuilt Automatic Table 1 the result was nothing
like the style the automatic table indicated. There was no indenting and
worst of all the complete text under the heading (and using style based on
BodyText) was included, with each paragraph separately numbered.
Same with Automatic Table 2.
Using the option Insert Table Contents and restricting the Toc entries to
the three heading styles in their proper levels works OK as it did in Word
2003.
Is there something I am missing?

Press Alt+F9 to show field codes. In the TOC field code, delete the \u
switch. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes, and update the TOC. Does
that help?

Thanks for your reply Stefan
Unfortunately your suggestion does not work.
It is an odd behaviour!

Since it's not direct formatting being picked up by the TOC, check if you
inadvertently applied outline level formatting to the Body Text style. In
the Modify Style dialog box for that style, click Format, and then click
Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, you should set the "Outline
level" to "Body Text." Then update the TOC again.

Stefan you are a wizard. The outline level was set to level 1 - don't ask me
how it happened - and changing it to Body text did the trick.
Many thanks
Gus
