Table has a variable size filed. limit filed size to left 10 chara

I have a querie that returns based on a filed that is from10 to 20 characters
in size.
I want to limit the size to 10 characters left justified, but not hurt the
data in the main table. This will allow me to count the number of 10
character expressions used.
Any thoughts

Add a new field in the query definition.

Set it up something like:

NewField: Left([YourField],10)
