tab doesn't work in an outline

When I'm making an outline or a numbered list in word and enter/tab for the
next level, word inserts a tab instead of going to the next level.

For example if you have:
1) This
2) is my
and you hit enter --> tab it should become:
1) This
2) is my
a) outline
but instead it becomes:
1) This
2) is my
3) outline.

Not sure why it changed from the default configuration but I can't figure
out how to get it back!

Nevermind, figured it out and can't figure out how to delete my question.

WHAT DID YOU DO????? I dd the same thing with my bulleting list and it has
been like this for a year!!! Has driven me nuts!!! you will make my day, no
make that my year if you tell me how to fix it!!!!
