Systray not in the task manager applications list

I'm running a media editing program that suggests closing all background
applications except explorer and systray, however systray is not being shown
on the applications list. Is there something else that it might be called?

Hello Docshooter,

Information about the Windows Systray.
What is it:

Short for system tray, the Windows systray is also known as the "shell
notification area" and "taskbar status area" and is a section of Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating
system.

Thanks Engel. Since it's recommended to only run "Explorer" and "Systray",
but "Systray" is actually missing from the background applications list, I'm
trying to figure out how to leave it running in the background.

I may be confused here, but isn't the recommendation to NOT close the
systray? (i.e. leave it running as in a normal boot) Anyway, if you
really want to find it, it's probably located in either the system/system32
folder as STOBJECT.DLL also known as System Tray Manager. It's started
from the windows registry, on my XP machine, by using:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad

Thanks Dave

Yes, I'm supposed to leave the systray and explorer running, and close all
the other processes. I'll give this a try and see what happens. I
appreciate the input.

Do you have a clock on the bottom right of the screen if you move your
cursor down there? That's the systray. The systray process itself is
hidden from a normal user. I'd be very surprised if it isn't running since
you've never disabled it.
I think what they're saying is that process is very unlikely to interfere
with your editing program so don't worry about disabling it, and if it's
really not there... well then everything is OK that way too (but you may
want to investigate why in the future)

Be VERY cautions about closing "all the other processes."

In general, you can close those started by your user name.

Certain system processes will cause a shutdown within 60 seconds if you
close them.

If you stick with the left tab--applications, I think you'll be fine, but be
wary of going too far with the processes tab.

I would not get within a bull's roar of this software, they are telling you
to tear down your shields - Defender, antivirus, firewall, mail scanners,
root kit detectors everything that you need and hopefully have to protect
yourself from parasites - this software should be regarded as a dangerous
parasite.

And I would flame the publishers via email for suggesting that folks expose
themselves to such risks, if they don't respond appropriately then get
secunia and similar organisations to check them out, they sound dodgy to we.

I wont bore you with the details but explorer (that's Windows Explorer, the
thing that is My Computer, My Documents etc, not to be confused with Internet
Explorer which does however have incestuous relations with the other) and
SysTray are one and the same - like love and marriage, horse and carriage;
you can't have one without the other.

I hope my worse fears are not realised and all goes well for you.

I writ "you can't have one with out the other ...", I should have writ "you
can't effectively have one without the other ...".

I wish all MS bulletin were the same. some allow post post editing, others
don't , some provide fancy voting features others don't etc. Still given the
number of mail systems they have on offer it's little wonder that they don't
have one format for bulletin boards, discussion groups, fora, community
groups etc.,
