system won't accept driver for usb 2.0

Have an SiS 661 FXM motherboard with usb 2.0. Ever since I've had the
computer has only worked as usb 1 (no enhanced controller in device manager).
When I let windows install the drivers for usb 2 all seems to go fine and
enhanced contoller appears in the device manger (and "device not installed"
warning disappears). However, when I reboot the computer it hangs without
fail (black screen) after "windows is installing". A reboot with a previous
working config gets me back to square one. Have tried to update drivers from
SiS, but they refer to OS (microsoft). Microsoft claims the problem is fixed
with sp2. I have sp2, but as I mentioned have had the problem since day one.
Anyone have any ideas?

Delete all the entries for USB in the device manager and reboot. It should
then reinstall the proper drivers for USB 2.0

Have you checked into a bios and chipset update? Not too familiar wit
SiS chipsets.
