system tray icons disappear

My system tray icons disappear, such as volume, battery,
safely remove devices etc, all tend to disappear.

"auto hide" is absolutely turned off, so it's not that.

this seems to be related to automatically logging in
without a password.

If I log out, and log back in, all of my taskbar icons
come back.

I found the following worked, but I was wondering if
there is a patch for this issue besides this.

Right-click on My Computer
Click on Manage
Expand 'Services & Applications'
Highlight 'Services'
Look through list of services on the right....
Find Universal Plug & Play Device Host
Right-click on it.
Click properties.
Change startup type to 'Disabled'
Do exactly the same with 'SSDP discovery service'

What are the implications of disabling these services?
Is there another workaround for this?
thanks,
Wes
