System Toast after Maxblast and Partition Magic

M

M

My pc is not booting since Partition Magic 'fixed' it.

I used Maxblast to copy my system to my new 120gb drive. It worked and
the system
run with the new drive as the new system drive after I hide the old
drive (40gb) with PM.

I used PM again and after it fixed the partition table, the pc
wouldn't boot.

Can I recover my system or data? Here is the output from running
findpart.

For disk 1 the Findpart findings so far do not match the description
of what happened. More examination will be needed to locate data on
that disk.

For disk 2, two FAT32 partitions were located. The partition tables
are wrong. I cannot add the partitions to the partition tables right
now, because there is a minor problem in the FAT for the first primary
partition. First and second FAT copy do not match in 1 sector. It
would be a minor risk to just add the partitions, and let
Scandisk/chkdsk attempt to fix the FAT, but I do not do that.

To evaluate the condition of the first partition on disk 2, the
following commands can be used:

chsdir 2 0 1 1 summary fp-a.txt fat1
chsdir 2 0 1 1 summary fp-b.txt fat2

Sorry, I forgot to add this in my first reply.

Disk 1 was patitioned into 2 partitions. Partition 1 was about 38gb and
partitiion eas about 79gb. The data on disk 1 was a copy of disk 2.

After I got into this mess I realized that I didn't need to use Maxblast since
my pc supports the 120gb disk. How can all traces of Maxblast be removed?

Thanks again.

I assume:

You have not touched the partition tables since Findpart was run the
first time.

The disk has not been in a Windows system since Findpart was run.

You stay in pure DOS until we are finished.

We then can repair and recover the partitions on disk 2 in two steps.
First we will repair the FAT of the primary partition, and make
entries for hidden partitions. To do that, you can download
milton1.bat in

http://www.partitionsupport.com/milton1.zip

put milton1.bat on the same boot floppy as findpart.exe, and run
milton1.bat, which contains:

set findpart=edit
findpart findfat 2 0 1 33 14993 fat2to1 5293
findpart 2 0 1 - 1C 0 1 1 2031 239 63 0 5293 240 63 26
findpart 2 0 2 - 85 2032 0 1 5292 239 63 0 5293 240 63 26
findpart 2 2032 1 - 0B 2032 1 1 5292 239 63 2032 5293 240 63 26
set findpart=
findpart all fp2-1.txt

Insert the content from fp2-1.txt here.

Next step will be to verify the result so far, and if OK make the
partitions on disk 2 visible.

The partitions on disk 2 have now been added to the partition tables.
If you know some DOS commands, I suggest you reboot to the floppy, and
make some dir commands on C:, D: and E:

It is not known if disk 2 will boot if it is inserted as disk 1, or
the BIOS is set to boot that disk first.

The condition of disk 1 is unknown, but according to the previous
Findpart output, the primary partition currently on the disk does not
contain any data. That does not mean that lost data cannot exist on
the disk.

It should be decided if data recovery attempts should be made on disk
1 before it is considered how to remove a disk manager, if installed.

Done, everything looks good on disk 2. Disk 1 looks empty.

Changed the BIOS to boot disk 2 and it is up and running. Of course the 2nd
partition has the wrong drive letter because of disk 1.

So, what can be done about disk 1? There's only a couple of places on this disk
that would be different from disk 2.

Time to eat...I haven't had anything all day!

Thanks,

Fine.

Disk 1 is a more advanced recovery job. You may have luck with some
standard recovery program. I do not know, but it may be a FAT32
without FAT recovery case, since a new empty partition was written at
the beginning of the disk. I may be able to help in mail, but prefer
only to work on a case like that if it is important.
