System stopped talking to the Internet

I have 3 different (Different MFG.) PIII laptops that have stopped
communicating with the Internet. All use Win 2000 and 2 have PCMCIA Cards
the other an internal NIC connection.

All worked for about a week then stopped (not at the same time) . All
device settings are correct as best as I and my ISP can determine. Device mgr
see the card and shows no conflict. I can ping the card from a command prompt
but can't get through to the Lan. The Network mamgaer sees the network . The
nick port activity light is on . I have changed dongles and cards to no
avail. The systems have stopped allowing communicating through the NIC cards
to either the lan or the internet.

This situation exists no matter what network I try to connect to and I have
tried 3 different networks all using DHCP.

I'm truly confounded, Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Terry,

You may wish to try installing the latest version of the drivers for the
network card, however i would imagine that the main issue with this is down
to OS updates that have been installed or possibly some form of fire wall.

I know that SP4 for win 2k is causing some communications issues like this
..... as is SP2 for XP ... you should be able to uninstall this through the
add/remove programs prompt.

Also check for firewalls that are installed in the system, this maybe
causing the communications block ... try turning off any firewall for a
temporary time and test the connections

I would also check the systems for virus's, Spyware and Adware .. these may
cause your issue.

Finally i would run "ipconfig" from a command prompt to ensure that the
settings for the network adapter are correct, sometimes the windows GUI of
the TCP/IP settings can be wrong.

Hi Terry,

Got a few different resolutions for you to try, sounds like a software
related issue ... most likely the OS and a service pack that has been
installed.

1. Try runnng "ipconfig" from the command prompt and insure that the TCP/IP
settings on the system are correct, the GUI of windows can sometimes mis
inform the user.

2. Ensure that SP4 is not installed, this can cause communications and
security issues, as can SP2 for XP. If this is installed you should be able
to remove it through the add/remove programs feature.

3. Try turning off any fire wall software you may have installed, this can
block any transmitions it deems "unsafe"

4. Scan for Virus, AdWare and SpyWare ... these can all cause issues.

5. Ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your hardware ... this
may be anything from the NIC adapter driver through to system board drivers
or BIOS ... check with the manufacturer.

This should somewhere down the line solve your issues, let me know how you
get one. if not i have a few other less likely options ... for these i would
need to know a bit more about the setup you have there .... you may wish to
test connection to the internet directly through a modem or somthing like
that.
