System Slowed Right Down.

E. Barry Bruyea

My system has slowed right down, literally overnite. The only change
that I've made is downloading the latest updates for XP yesterday.
I've got a 2 gig system with 2 gig of RAM which was operating great 24
hours ago. Any chance one of the recent updates could be a bit wonky?

What a silly response even if an update had caused the problem! You have
no idea how important any of the updates are!

In what ways has the computer slowed down? Is it the boot process or
later?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System log in
Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

In what ways has the computer slowed down? Is it the boot process or

My computer boots very fast, usually about 45 seconds. All programs
extremely slow opening and Control Panel, Explorer, very slow
populating; average about 40-50 seconds. I also use jv16, but never
use it to delete entries, only for information. When I run the
Registry Cleaner option, it used to take about 1-1/2 minutes, now it
takes 13 minutes.
What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

I've run AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware, all good.
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Limit is 5087556
Peak is 248784
How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

C: 80 gig, 31 gig free
D: 300 gig 125 gig free (page file is on this drive)
Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

No. It runs about 12 hours each day, as I work at home. I shut it off
at night.

What are your most commonly used programmes?

Are you using any Norton or McAfee products?

Please open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report
and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Can you please do this for both drives

You say there are no Error or Warning Reports in Event Viewer. Are there
any Reports in the System log? I ask the question to determine whether
Event Viewer is functioning.

How many processes are typically running in Task Manager? Is there any
dubious or unexpected CPU usage?

It might be worthwhile checking the health of your hard drives.Try
running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Gerry, I really appreciate the time you've taken to consider my
problem, but right now, frustration is overcoming my powers of
detection. What's your best guess as to what is causing my problem?
As near as I can see, it appears that anything requiring access to my
HD just takes it's merry old time...to the extreme. Take a shot at a
couple of guess's.

Guessing is a waste of time in these circumstances. The only way forward
is to explore each possibility until one gets a positive clue as to the
cause. We haven't got the clue yet.

Yes, there is a chance this is what happened.

Similar thread here:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...6/da8c5e4f73fdcfd5?lnk=st&q=#da8c5e4f73fdcfd5

Physically disconnect your machine from the Internet and uninstall the
updates. Then reboot. Then let us know. HTH.

To uninstall updates:

Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. In the Add/Remove Programs
window select the Show Update check box; scroll down to the most recent
updates. Start uninstalling the non-crucial updates first (Net 3.0 may
be the culprit). This way you won't even be touching the security
updates. Or perhaps you automatically downloaded/installed faulty
drivers (actually, you should never get drivers from MS anyway --
rather, get them from the hardware manufacturer).

Question to others:

What happens if a PC user performs a System Restore to a point before
the updates?
