system slowdown

N

Neil Harwani

I have a Win XP Pro with P 4 1.7 GHZ and 512 SDRAM and 40+20 GB HDD. I have
a unique problem which I haven't encountered before. Whenever internet is
started, all the new programs that I start take a really long time to load.
During this time system is quite responsive, all open programs function
well, they respond and work as I want them too, just that all new programs
that I try to open, open after a really long delay like 1 minute, 2 minute
or sometimes even 5-8 minutes, nothing new opens. Norton Antivirus fully
updated doesn't show a virus, Spybot shows no spyware. Could the reason be
that i have installed many programs. System is never slow normally and is
quite fast, just when net is on, new programs take long time to open.
Neil.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem on a PIII laptop. The
programs open immediately when I unplug my ethernet cable and the
computer recognizes that the network connection is missing. (That
recognition process can also be slow too, but it usually happens
quickly if I'm listening to a streaming radio broadcast.) I suspect
some windows networking service is going on a rampage, but I don't know
which one. I am connecting to the net through a proxy, and I use the
Mozilla 1.7 browser.

I managed to fix my system.

Start->Run->"services.msc"

Stop and disable all services that you are sure you don't need. I
you're not sure if you need it and you want to be safe, you can set i
to Manual, but then the offending service might start anyway.

I have the following service settings:
