system shutting down when online

P

Peter King

I changed operating systems from 98 to XP Pro. Believe I
had a virus in 98. Every time I go on line I get this
message cwindows/system32/Isass.exe....-1073741819 status
code...initiated by NT authority/system, terminated
unexpectedly and then proceeds to shut down in 60 sec.
And for awhile I was getting pop-ups (maybe what you'd
call them) saying comp has worm or spyware visit win-
fix.com, or security bulletin ms03-003, buffer overrun in
Messenger service could allow code execution
(828035)...system affected download patch from
patchwindows.org,
I am looking for advice on this problem.
thank You for an help.
Sincerely
peter

Peter,

The pop-ups from patchwindows.org were probably part of the problem. Malicious
advertising from websites like patchwindows.org is too common - legit software
companies do not advertise this way.

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown or reboot:
Start - Run, type "shutdown -a", and hit Enter.
That should halt the reboot. Now fix the problem.

Immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

Download and install Security patch KB824146:

And about the Nachi / Welchia worm:

Download and run the Blaster and Welchia worm removal tool (Windows 2K/XP):

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
