system restore problem

I went to accessories/system tools/system restore and clicked it. I then got
a small dialogue window asking if I wanted to continue and I clicked
continue. That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was
expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my
screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore
was already running and would now exit.

What might I be doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. The 'continue' screen is simply the UAC
(Use Account Control) asking for permission to continue. As you say another
window should have popped up with a list of system restore points.

Two things you can try. Boot your PC as normal the click
Start>accessories>system Tools. Now 'right' click on the system restore
option and, from the drop down list, click on 'run as administrator' and see
if that brings up the system restore window. If it doesn't then restart you
PC and enter 'safe mode' (when you pc starts you will need to keep tapping
the F8 button until a menu appears, select Safe mode and click enter) Once
in safe mode try system restore again and see what happens.

Anne, I haven't experienced this with Windows Vista, but it can take up to
30 second or more in the current build of Windows 7 before system restore
appears.

Not waiting long enough.

Unlike some of the others in this thread, it consistently takes 3 or 4
minutes for my System restore interface to show up.

I do not enjoy that

My system restore takes 30 seconds , I use the ERUNT system .

Are you saying that when you install the ERUNT system, your System Restore
gets faster, or are you saying ERUNT is faster than System Restore?

A bit ambiguous there, IMO...

Mine too. Perhaps 2-3 minutes, although I've never timed it. I can't
understand how it can possibly take that long to grab a list of
restore points. Maybe they have some kind of file check running before
they present the restore points. (Can't tell, MS likes dumbed down
interfaces that don't tell you anything).

I also always get a failure after system restore runs, although it
still seems to work.

ERUNT is faster than system restore , I use it to restore my system ;
I`ve turned the system one off .

have to say I've used Erunt for saving the registry but have never had cause
to use it as a 'restore' package. I'll have to give it a try alongside
system restore to see how much quicker erunt is compared to system restore.
Personally I always keep an image of my hard drive (one which is, at the
most, only one day out of date) and if any problems occur I always restore
the image of the drive instead.

The main reason for me is : system restore only uses restore dates
that are highlighted , whereas any day/date can be used on ERUNT .

System Restore is unreliable? You can be serious!

Note: I said CAN, not CAN'T. In other words, I find it unreliable too.

I use image backups as well, but I'm nowhere near as responsible as you
are.

ERUNT (Latin for "they were") might not be a solution, though, if it only
saves the registry. SR does more (when it works).

I timed it again the other day and it was only 2.5 minutes. I swear it took
longer before, but SR is enough to confound the most resilient mind,
sometimes.

Like you, I can't imagine what it does for that time, whether it's 2.5 or 4
minutes. Not a clue...

My system restore failed every time until I found out (Google and forums
came to the rescue) that NIS 2009 has a setting in Product Security called
Tamper Protect. Cleverly, NIS doesn't tell you about this, warn you when
it's occurring, or recognize System Restore as legitimate. But you can turn
it off manually before doing a restore.

If I had done stuff like that as a programmer, I would have gotten a job at
a fast food place instead of staying in software.

Just checked mine... about 5 SECONDS. It's been like that for
probably the past six months.

One reason might be because I only have about 7gigs of space allocated
for restore points.
