System Restore Points

R

Rama

My system religiously sets restore points, which I've never used until today
when my AVG anti-virus created problems. I wanted to restore the system to
yesterday, then to 02/13, 02/12, 02/8, ..... 01/15. Unfortunately, for all
the dates, I was getting a message that the system cannot be restored to the
date mentioned. Now, how to solve this problem?

I checked Computer properties > System Restore, to see whether the system
restore has been set to 'off,' but no, the box is not checked.Any help is
highly appreciated.

Thanks.

It System Restore was set to 'off' you would
not have any restore points.

Something on your system is preventing the
restore...probably a virus scanner.

Try doing the System Restore in Safe Mode...

Hi John,

Thanks for your response.

Tried to restore in safe mode but the result is the same. You could be right
about something preventing the restoration. Is there any knowledge base
articles about such problems?

Once again thank you very much.

The article posted by Daave is an excellent one.

Personally I've never had System Restore to fail
in Safe Mode so I have no suggestions.

Hi 'Daave,'

The link you've given has helped me resolve the issue. It was Zone Alarm
that was preventing the system restoration. I uninstalled and tried system
restoration and it worked. On the lighter side, by the meantime the system is
restored, I've clean forgotten why I wanted to restore my system in the first
place. Can't remember, but have uninstalled AVG anti virus, Ad Aware and Zone
Alarm.

Thanks a lot and may your tribe increase ten folds to help peaople like me.

Glad it worked. Thanks for posting back.

You're very welcome. Just make sure you reinstall your anti-malware
apps.

Yes, I'm a bit puzzled why Safe Mode didn't work for OP. I guess Zone
Alarm altered the registry in such a way that prevents SR from working
even if ZA is disabled.
