system restore password issue

I am trying to restore an existing system by booring to the original WinXP
home cd. After the files load, I make the selection to "repair" by selecting
"R". The drive letter is displayed and when that is selected, I get asked for
the admin password. I know that I have never set any passwords on the
computer. Atr this point , it should still be running from the cd. If I boot
this computer from the safe mode, and select "ADMIN" , it does not ask for a
password.
Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate them.
And I am sorry for posting this twice. When I posted the first time, the
system said that I had not "properly" authenicated my account. So I redid it
and tried it again.
