System Restore Not Working

rfbeck

In Win XP SP3, when I try to use system restore I get and error message:
"system restore application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience". With the customary option to send an error
report to Microsoft. Any ideas on a solution?
Thanks.

Troubleshooting steps for issues when you try to use the System Restore tool
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q302796/

If that won't solve the problem try these:
You'll need your XP cd to proceed.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore folder and rename rstrui.exe
to rstrui.xxx.
1. Go to Start > Run and type "cmd", press enter
2. In the DOS window type "CD C:\" ,press enter
3. Insert the Windows XP disk in the CD drive.
4. At C:\ prompt type "sfc/scannow",press enter

This process compares the original files from the CD and replaces any
corrupt files on your computer. Try System Restore

If still won't work the next step would be to reinstall System Restore. The
only downside of this is that all restore points will be purged in the
process.

Posting a copy of the Error Report from Event Viewer might be helpful.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

That's what it says in the link I posted. What use are they if System
Restore is not working?

Rfbeck: I have the identical problem and error with system restore. I couldn't reinstall system restore as outlined in the links. Did you get a resolution?

Identical System Restore Problem as Rfbeck

What to do if reinstallation of system restore fails. I have uninstalled SP3, and reinstalled using SP2 files - didn't work. Reinstalled SP3 didn't work.

I have can dual boot with XP since I have had to manually revive my registry in the past. That isn't going to do me much good right now since I wipe out almost all previous restore points - base on a recommedation to clean the disk.
