System Restore no longer works

Using XP Home on an hp with a PIV @3.0 GH with HT; 160 G hard drive, 512 M
RAM. Yesterday after downloading and installing the Holiday Snowflakes
Screen Safer from the Microsoft Download site, computer started acting
hinky/slowed to a crawl. Uninstalled the MS download, tried to to a System
Restore. Goes through the motions, shuts down, reboots to the error message
"Restoration Incomplete. Your system cannot be restored........" Checked in
System Restore Service to make sure it was turned on. Checked to make sure I
didn't have a High Point driver. Tried to do a System Restore in Safe Mode.
No luck. Did the download of SP2 about 3 weeks ago with no problems that I'm
aware of. Any suggestions out there? Help!

Your system restore files are corrupt. You must turn off system restore, you
will lose all restore files. Then turn system restore back on.

go to start>run and type

sysdm.cpl

then go to System Restore and check "Turn off System Restore", then click
Apply.

then uncheck "turn off System Restore", then click Apply.

You should create a restore point by

start>run and type

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

the select "create a restore point" then next and follow the directions.

Good Luck
