System Restore Hanging

For 3 years I have been really impressed with my Dell Inspiron 8200
notepad as I haven't had a single problem with the hardware or
software.

Unfortunately that has all changed recently and started with Windows
Update hanging during the Initialisation stage of an automatic update.

It didn't take long to realise that it was actually System Restore
causing the problem as I was unable to install new software, presumably
as it tries to create a Restore point.

If I try to create a Restore point, the notepad hangs and never
finishes. It is necessary for me to kill the application after which
nothing works very well so I have to reboot. Usually I have to force
rundll32.exe and a few other processes to die before the PC will
shutdown.

I am able to switch off System Restore and things seem to be okay,
except restore points are obviously not being created and it wouldn't
be possible for me to restore should it become necessary.

I have spent hours looking for information on what could be causing
this - the Microsoft website is lacking in information and all
suggestions have failed. I have even tried re-installing System
Restore but it makes no difference.

I would greatly appreciate some help in tracking down the problem.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Have you tried running System Restore from Safe Mode as a test?

You wont be able to restore the system back to a point before SR was reinstalled
because that would have deleted all existing restore points.
