System Restore doesn't restore

I am having a problem with my system restore: it always says no action
taken when I am trying to restore to a previous point and that is even
when I go back 2 months!
As I have installed quite a few programs since then it puzzles me
somewhat and I am a bit apprehensive when I think that I might _really_
need it.

I had a (possibly) not related problem with Windows Update and some guys
gave me a great batch file with a lot of regserv entries and it worked
again. Something similar available for this problem?

Ok. Followed the advice. Crossing my fingers that this will work when I
