System recovery!!!!!

hello all!

i have a quick question, i have windows xp home edition,
when i started my computer, it got to the login screen,
when i typed in my password, windows restarted. This kept
happening. So on the steup screen, pressed f8, and
selected "last known good configuration setup", windows
ran but the screen resolution was way out and over half
the programs wouldn't work including help & support,
system restore and the taskbar didn't appear. This is also
applies in the safe mode!

I have a system recovery set of cd's that have come with
my sony vaio desktop, what i would like to know is when
the 1st cd is in the drive and the screen comes up in dOS,
it ask "are you sure you want to continue, all dat will be
lost upon recovery" or something along those lines! does
this mean that all the software installed since i got the
computer will be deleted, or all the files, i.e. music,
video & work stuff!, will be deleted!?!

can anyone help!

if anyone knows of a way to rectify this problem i have
without doinf a system recovery, please let me know!!!!!

THANKS!

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without
warning. The setting that controls this can be changed:

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System
Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart.

You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs, gather
information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows
security events.

To view the event log: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or
Start/Run/eventvwr.

To review Shutdown Event Tracker data, Open Event Viewer. Click System Log,
scroll to the Event column, and find entries with the number 1075.

Hi

It seems as though you have a 'Recovery' disk(s). That message signifies that all data will be lost as the hard disk/partition will be reformatted. If you have to go this way make sure - if possible - that all your important data files - Word, Excel etc - are backed up before you proceed. If you are not certain as to what will happen, please contact your PC supplier for more information.
