System reboots after choosing boot option

Hi

I have Windows XP servicepack-2 installed and it was working fine.
After a hard reset, when I boot I am presented with the boot menu with
options like Safe mode, start windows normally, last known good
configuration, etc. But as soon as I choose one the system reboots.

Any pointers are welcome.

Will it boot from a bootable CD?

Is the data backed up? If not do that first.

You could try a repair install:
