system process on 99%?

Hi,

My HP laptop which was working fine until last week now has the System
process grabbing all available cpu instead of system idle process.

The m/c is behind a router, had av and fw programs updated daily if
necessary and I do not fileshare across the net.

No virus or spyware found.

Any ideas on how to proceed.

Several system restores going back about 1 month did not help.
A repair did not help.
Removing all items from startup and reboot did not help.

M/c also does not shutdown powerwise anymore after windows shutsdown,
yet switching off and on, it thinks it has as, so it has written its
info to disk, just not powered down the m/c.

can you see which process is hogging the cpu? If you do ctrl/alt/del
and bring up task manager and look in the processes you may see which
one it is, then it may lead to an idea of the problem.
