System Mechanic 6

The latest PC World gives a very complimentary write-up for the latest
version of System Mechanic 6.

What do the experts here think of it? It apparently includes a registry
compacter and I know the views here have suggested that compacting the
registry does nothing to speed up XP.

No advertising dollars here. As usual, after improperly using it, a
quick reinstall of Windows will put it right again.

I wouldn't recommend iolo System Mechanic 6. The software has only ever
caused issues with my software installations, causing myself to format my HDD
and reinstall Windows XP Home Edition SP2. It is a misleading package and
dangerous in the hands of anyone who doesn't know how to use such packages
safely. I did know how to use the software, but it only caused grief. I have
since upgraded to Windows XP Professional.
Registry "Cleaners" are dangerous tools and if you are going to edit the
registry, make sure you know exactly what you are doing, as the registry is
not a tool you should be using without the correct knowledge as it can very
easily cause Windows to cease booting if you happen to incorrectly edit the
database.

I would advise staying clear of all registry based "cleaning" applications.

Hi - I am having all sorts of anoying little problems such as failing
screen savers, slow printers, missing files when trying to remove
programs, etc etc. Taken one at a time I could live with it but the
cumulation is causing me grief!! I have done several system restores
and also have to admitr to using a couple of registry clean up tools
too - THEN i read your post !

I think I have reached the stage of having to reinstall windows xp but
need to know 2 things please -

1. Will that clear out all the old registry settings? and
2. Can you give me an indication of how to actually do it(do I need to
format drive etc)?

I have not used it but, from reading the other posts in this thread and
given PCWorld's report I would not be afraid to use it. I would create
a restore point prior to use and always backup anything you do not want
to lose.

Hi Jeff,
While I cannot comment on Sys. Mech. directly, I *do* trust the MVP's that
strongly suggest *against* using any "Registry Cleaner", except in the hands
of a very astute Windows user (I'm not). They really can cause more harm
than good. It is my understanding (someone correct me if need be) that XP
is not as sensitive to Registry problems/bloat that W9x systems were, but I
may be mistaken.

I am using SM6 and the program works fine.
When I use the program, I usually activate each module for whatever it is
supposed to do.
I don't let SM6 completely clean out my computer with one click (total care
as it is called in SM6 ) because I had problems.
For one instance: Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe, when the program would start,
it would ask for the program cd.
I didn't have that problem til SM6.
When using SM6, I write down a restore point so if I had a problem, I can go
back to that time.
My major gripe about Iolo is that I have written 3 questions for tech
support.
No replies , just generated computer replies.
If you use SM6, don't turn it loose on your computer.
It could do more damage than good.
The program works very fast on a 2.66mhz Pentium 4 with 512 megs of rd-ram.
I may not be buying SM7 because of the tech support issue.
Just a thought!!

I have SM6. I uninstalled SysMech and Kept Kaspersky Anti-Hacker [Firewall]
and Kaspersky Antivirus. [They're bundled with the version of SM6 that I got.]
The System Mechanic defaults may screw up your system, and there are dozens
of automated settings to turn off.
A little file corruption, and changes to your system become Permanent!
I also found out that Kaspersky uses rootkit technology. [So] any check for
a rootkit after installing it reveals every file to contain a rootkit!
eFF-ing GREAT!

I have a computer that is 3 yrs old and i never had to reinstall XP.
It runs fine mostly all the time.
If it messes up, that is usually the fault of me.
Can't tell you how to reinstall Windows but the MVP's and the one's that
have done it certainly can tell you how to do it.
All I know is that a clean install sets up your computer like the day you
turned it on the first time.
To keep my computer running, I use Norton systemworks 2005 and Webroot
Window washer.
I have never had a problem with Norton cleaning up my registry and other
problems that might arise.
I really don't have a problem letting Systemworks cleanout my computer.
the program I use the most is Goback.
Goback is part of systemworks.
I used goback when SM6 corrupted the way Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe would
try to start up.
Goback fixed the problem in about 4 minutes.
If I update or install a program, I write down the time and if the computer
doesn't perform correctly, I use Goback to restore my computer to a point
when it did work fine.
Window Washer just simply cleans my computer and it does it fast.
No ill effects with either program.
Now SM6, no tech response as of now but I cautiously use each module.
The modules I use the most is the memory recovery module and start up
programs module.
With the start up module, I learned that some start up programs can't be
disabled or deleted.
I didn't know that til using SM6.
It has graphics that tell you which startups are necessary and not
necessary.
It gives a ton of information on startups.
No more guessing or disabling the startup programs one by one.
Just be careful which modules you use and try them one at a time.
Just like Microsoft updates: 908531 and 911567, they can cause more trouble
than good.
Be cautious with SM6.
Just a thought!!!!!!!!
