System locks up when switching users

I installed Defender yesterday on a XP system. When my wife switched to her
user account on this computer it was running really slow and finally locked
up. I did a hard restart and signed in to her user account. All was fine
until I switched to my account and the same slow down occurred followed by a
lock up.

I uninstalled Defender and all is fine. What is causing this?

I have not had that problem while using Defender, but I did have it before
with Webroot Spysweeper. I had to disable fast user switching by going to
control panel>user accounts>change the way users log on. Sometimes one user
profile prevents the other from logging in successfully. There's also a
little Mircosoft utility that installs as a service to help clear this up:
