System Information Problem

G

Guest

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 with IE 7. Whether I attempt to
access System Information through Programs/System Tools/System Information,
using run MSinfo32.exe or through Help and Support Center, I get the exact
same error message (no error number provided). It reads: Microsoft Help and
Support Center has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.

Can anyone tell me how to correct this? I tried using Windows Live, among
many other things, but can't even get that to work. Get error message
Oxo4601CO1. Lots of other folks are getting same message, but there is no
information provided.

Thanks in advance.

This may also be of help to you:

Scroll down to "Odd msinfo32.exe problem".

Thanks, It helped me :) I had the same problem with msinfo32.
-But I didn't crash, the help center would open.

I run MSINFO32 and
"E:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe" -mode
hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.xml
was the command line that would run.

I dual boot Pro/Home copied the index.bat file over as per link and
MSINFO32 now works...

OP: if you need the index.dat file, I uploaded it here
http://download.yousendit.com/7F6A0A804CEDB1CC

Download, unzip, and put it in this directory:
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache
(C drive assumed)

Thanks. I visited the message board prior to writing and it was of
absolutely no help whatsoever.

The System Volume Information is the hidden, protected operating
system folder in which WinXP's System Restore feature stores
information used to recover from errors. It's really not a good idea
for you, or any utilities or antivirus applications, to directly
access the contents of that folder, unless you expect to have no
future use for the restore points, in which case it would be simpler
just to turn off the System Restore feature.

However, if you're confident that you know exactly what you're doing:

Steve,

Forgive me for asking what you probably consider a dumb question; however,
my technical competence is far from equal to the expertise of you and the
other good folks who are kind enough to provide help and answers at this
message board.

I downloaded http://download.yousendit.com/7F6A0A804CEDB1CC, saved to my
desktop and unzipped. But I did not complete the action because I
encountered a problem when I tried to put it in:
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache.

There is already an index.dat file from 2004, much smaller in size.
Assuming that I am not supposed to replace it with this "new" one, should I
just rename index.dat to something else and copy to that folder.

I assume that you believe that this new file will allow my System
Information tool to open as it should and not continue to display the dialog
box stating that Microsoft Help and Support Center has encountered a
problem.....

Many thanks,

I did unhide "protected operating system files" however, still unable to open
system information without getting the same error message. So, I changed
back to the default. Thanks anyway.

Bruce,

Is system volume information the same thing as system information?

MarcyS

No, it isn't. I think I misread your original post. Please disregard
me response.

That's to bad, if it were missing you'd be good to go.

you can rename the one there already and replace it with the new
Index.dat and see if it works.

All I can think of now is that you might want to try to start msinfo32
in safe mode (when you boot, hit F8 to get to that option). Or else, if
the data provided by the System Information is really critical to you,
you can gather this information by running different tools (device
manager, running "echo %PATH%" in a dos box, etc). Finally, there are a
number of tools that show the same information. You can search
www.download.com for "system information". One program that seems to
suit your needs is SysJewel (haven't tried it, though). Also, if you
happen to have Word or Excel 2003, there is a System Information option
in the Help menu.

Thankyou, thankyou. I have searched for months to find a copy of
that file. My msinfo problem is now solved!
