System Idle Process

My computer lately has been running very slow and often
freezes up then un-freezes some time after. On the
windows task manager system idle process is often 80+ CPU
where as other processes. I have no idea what it is or
what it does. Could this be slowing my computer down?

Thanks in advanced.

No.

What does a car do when it idles?

What do you think your computer does when it waits for work? It IDLES.

No.

"System Idle Process" is not any problem at all. That's just the
name for what the system is doing when it's not doing anything.
It's there to make the total add up to 100%.

Greetings --

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. The
"System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has *nothing* to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

If your System Idle Process is reading @ 80%, then something else
is heavily accessing the CPU. Look for any process(es) that use more
than a few percent.

Marc;
I am idle 80% of the time myself. Sometimes even up to 99% of the time.
