System Idle Process

I'm not sure if I'm asking the right people, but I've
been having 'problems' with something called System Idle
Process. I don't even know if it's actually a problem.
When my computer suddenly stops responding for about 2
mins at a time I press CTRL,ALT,DEL and learn that my CPU
usage is usually up to 100%, and that System Idle Process
is up to 99% or 90 something. Why is this happening, does
anyone know? And is it normal to have 30something process
running/going at the same time? Thnks for your help

Look up the word 'idle' in a dictionary.

Greetings --

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. The
"System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has *nothing* to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear. Something else is bogging down your system and consuming
CPU cycles; you'll need to look for something other than the System
Idle Process.

That is the little loop of code that is run when there is absolutely
nothing else to do, and the system is waiting. Liken it to the machine
twiddling its thumbs waiting for a job

SO it is usually about 98% when no applications are running - the rest
going into the task manager you are using to check on it

No need to go so far as a dictionary, Bruce (he'd probably have to find out
what one was first!) maybe he could try inputting 'idle' into Google...he
must know what a search engine is...
