What is the system idle process and why does it sometimes use up 90% of my memory? I have 396 megs of ram, so no idea what can use that much or why

The key word there is, "IDLE". 99% means that you are only using 1%, that is
good. 99% of your resources are just sitting there waiting for something to
do.

When you start your car, your engine 'idles' even though you haven't touched
the gas pedal. Same thing with a computer.

System Idle Process is exactly what it sounds like.
It is the % of processing power you have waiting for something to do,
doing nothing.

If you are having problems, this is not the cause.
