SYSTEM 'FREEZING' AT RANDOM

I'm running a newer system w/ XP-SP2, 512MB, 2X2 mirror/stripe,P4 3.0. System
keeps "freezing" randomly--it doesn't matter what program I'm running or how
much load the system is under. ESC,CTRL+DEL, etc. does nothing. keyboard is
useless as well as the mouse. No error messages. I have to do a restart
directly from the computer and then everything is hunky-dorey (until the next
time). I've done a disc clean and defrag, run spybot, and all firewalls and
security are up to date. Any help? Please?

One thing, computers DO NOT do ANYTHING at random intervals! They do
EXACTLY what a preprogrammed set of instructions has told them to do
when certain things happen. Sometime the bsod, blue screen of death,
comes up but even that is a sign that something is amiss.
Now that we have that out of the way be a bit mroe detailed in what
EXACTLY is running when the freezes occur. How much hard drive space
is there total? how much free ahrd drive space is there? What else are
you doing when this happens? Do you start and shutdown your system or
do you let it run 24/7?
You siad "mirror/stripe" are you referring to a raid system? If so are
the hard drive lights on and can you hear the drives running when the
stoppage occurs?
If you leave the system alone for say 10 minutes does it come back and
be usefull again? Or have you never left it alone that long?

I am having the same problem. It is very puzzling. I have re-installed
Windows XP a number of times. I have done virus and spyware tests. I have
lots of disk space. Sometimes the system last a few minutes and then other
times it last a long time. I notice that if I leave the system alone for a
long while - hours then it still works but when I try to do anything it
freezes. Sometimes I get a blue screen with a stop message which I do not
know what it means. It is really frustrating. I hope someone can help me.
I do not know a lot about the BIOS system. Maybe there is a virus or spyware
in there? The system is not hot because I touch the case and I have warnings
setup in the BIOS menu to let me know it is running hot. The light remains
on even when the system freezes but I do not hear anything going on.
Sometimes the system restarts itself then it comes up a critical error
message when it revives itself. When the system freezes it need to do a cold
start to start it again since my mouse and keyboard do not work anymore

Is your system running hot? Is the power supply going bad?

I am having a similar problem with my system. I doubt our problems are
exactly the same, but I'll explain as much about my system as I know. I am
running Windows XP on a HP Pavillion with 512 MB of DDR ram and a 100 GB
Harddrive; it has a AMD XP 2800+ processor. I got the system about 8 months
ago as a refurb. I had a little trouble with the cpu fan or power supply a
while ago, I forget which, but my brother took care of that. So I'm pretty
sure it's not an overheating problem, or a bad power supply; however, I could
very well be wrong. My computer will sometimes freeze when I leave it
running for few hours, sometimes I'll let it run all night and it works fine,
and sometimes I let it run all night and I wake up to it being frozen. So it
seems to happen "at random"; however, I understand your point that nothing
happens at random. I have taken notice of what programs are running when it
freezes, and also I have noted that the CPU pegs just before it freezes at 0%
CPU usage. The CPU does this every time. I've never been around just as it
freezes, so as to hearing anything (i.e. cpu fan, harddisk, cd drive, etc.) I
have no clue if it makes any sounds when it freezes. We have DSL internet
service running to two computer systems (laptop and this desktop); so I'm on
a network. Also, I have AVG Anti-virus running. The "avg*.*" are AVG
Anti-virus processes.
I'll give you a list of the processess that I have been running when it
freezes:

I'll give them to you like this: system process (Username)

taskmgr (Owner), OPXPApp (SYSTEM), svchost (SYSTEM), omniServ (SYSTEM),
nvsvc32 (SYSTEM), avgupsvc (SYSTEM), avgamsvr (SYSTEM), spoolsv (SYSTEM),
svchost (NETWORK SERVICE), svchost (SYSTEM), lsass (SYSTEM), services
(SYSTEM), winlogon (SYSTEM), csrss (SYSTEM), smss (SYSTEM), explorer (Owner),
System (SYSTEM), and System Idle Process (SYSTEM).

I've tried to be as specific as I can, but if you need anymore info... I'll
do my best to get it. Hope this helps in our search for the answer to end
this freezing prob.

I have a simliar problem with my desktop PC...
system specs:
HP Pavillion, AMD Athlon XP 2800+, 100 GB Harddrive, 512 MB Ram
I go the system about 6 months ago as a refurb. I had some problems with
either the cpu fan or power supply (I forget which), but my brother fixed it.
So I don't think the problem is overheating or a bad power supply. My system
seems to freeze at "random" (However, I understand your point that nothing
happens randomly). I can leave it sometimes running all night for two days
with no problems, and sometimes it runs for a few hours then freezes. I have
never been around when it freezes, so I'm not sure if there are any sounds
coming from the computer when it freezes. I know that the cpu pegs just
before it goes to 0% usage and freezes. I also have an AVG Anti-virus program
that is always running; so the "avg*.*" processes are anti-virus processes. I
also have DSL broadband internet access which runs to two computers from the
router. So, I have a laptop on my network as well as the desktop I'm using.
The processes I have been running while the system freezes are listed below:
I'll give them to you like this: system process (Username)

OPXPApp (SYSTEM), svchost (SYSTEM), omniServ (SYSTEM), nvsvc32 (SYSTEM),
avgupsvc (SYSTEM), avgamsvr (SYSTEM), spoolsv (SYSTEM), taskmgr (Owner),
svchost (NETWORK SERVICE), svchost (SYSTEM), svchost (SYSTEM), lsass
(SYSTEM), services (SYSTEM), winlogon (SYSTEM), csrss (SYSTEM), smss
(SYSTEM), explorer (Owner), System (SYSTEM), and System Idle Process (SYSTEM).

If you need any more info, I'll do my best to get it to you. I don't know
much about computers, but I can get around. :) Hope we all find the answer to
this problem.
