System freezes, vertical lines

I have a weird problem.

The system: P3, 900Mhz, 512megs of ram, WinXP Home

The problem:
I will be using it, and all of a sudden it freezes, and the screen is
covered with vertical lines. I have to reset the computer to get it
working.

It's been a stable until now. I've just cleaned the computer of
spyware using Spybot and Ad-ware. Is it possible that they are
related?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely the video card is failing. Could be heat related. Make sure all
the fans are clean and functioning. Next most likely culprits are
motherboard or ram.
