System freeze during re-starts

G

Guest

During start up the PC freezes usually at any time in the first 5 minutes or
so. The mouse becomes erratic and eventually stops and graphics do same.
Control/alt/delete has no effect but leaving PC untouched for a couple of
minutes clears the system. During freezes Task Manager shows CPU performance
at 100% which then drops off and Pc becomes re-usable. Have had problem for
approx. 2 months but System Restore will not work on early check point dates,
giving the response 'Restoration Incomplete - Computor cannot be restored to
.....'. System is XP home edition with SP2, firewall, anti-virus and
anti-spyware systems are installed and running. Any help in overcoming the
problem would be greatly appreciated.

Look in the application and system logs for Error and Warning Reports
covering the last three times you started and shut down your computer.
Post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What is the Image name of the process using the CPU? Look in Task Manager.

Hope this helps.

Download adaware and spybot to a new folder. Disable system restore.
Boot to safe mode and install each and run. Delete all nasties. Reboot
normally. Run each again, update first.

You seem to have a number of problems. We need to remove the cause of
some to be able to concentrate on the others.

In an attempt to eliminate the Event ID: 1517 errors install the User
Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt

DCOM Event ID: 10010 relates to a problem with MSN Messenger. What
is the situation regarding MSN Messenger on your machine?

In Windows Explorer search your machine for msmsg.exe. How many
copies do you find? You should ensure you can see hidden files first.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked.

Event ID: 7000 and 7009 may be a problematic driver. When was your
printer new and what make and model is it?

Event ID: 1007 looks to be warning of a configuration issue relating to
your Router. What is the make and model of the Router? Do you have
a Manual to consult?

You can have a number of processes running svchost.exe.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
svchost producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.
