System Crashes

I need your opinions!

I've post this problem before and received some good
advice. However, none of the suggestions worked. Here is
what is happening.

My computer crashes every time I go online. Sometimes it
crashes during the dial-up process. It only crashes when
I'm online. I'm thinking it may be a conflict of some
kind between the modem and the video card. When it
crashes, I get a blue screen with this information.

DRIVER IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
or
The problem may be due to mismatched memory. Also, try
replacing the video adapter.

I only have one stick of memory and it is what came with
the computer. The video card that came with the computer
went out, and I replaced it with an old Voodoo 3 card I
had. There are no conflicts that show up in the device
manager. However, I noticed that both the modem and video
card are using the same IRQ setting. Could they be
conflicting when both are in use? I've tried uninstalling
the modem to see if Windows would set it up with a
different IRQ setting, but it keeps going back to the
same one. Windows will not let me set the IRQ to a
different number.

System:
AMD Athlon 1.46
Windows XP Home Edition
Generic SoftK56 Modem
3dfx Voodoo3 Display adapter

Some history

This I started having problems with my video card about
six months ago. It would freeze up while playing games. I
downloaded newer drivers and it seemed to help. I had one
really hard crash about 4 months ago and that is when I
started having real problems. The system started freezing
up again. I tried several sets of newer video drivers and
had no luck. The system started crashing about once a
week and has gotten to the point where it usually crashes
within minutes of going on line. Then my GForce 2 video
card went completely out and I switched to the old Voodoo
3 card. In the last month, along with the crashes,
programs just close out for now reason and with no error
message. I have problem with both of my Cd players
started stopping in the middle of programs or not working
at all. I'm at a loss for what to do. I talked to one
tech guy who was convinced that it is a conflict, but had
no real answer. He said try changing the slot for the
modem, which I did with no success.

Any help is much appreciated and very much needed.

XP can share IRQs between devices that are themselves capable of sharing
IRQs. Your particular devices may not be capable of sharing. You may be
stuck with doing a repair install of XP. But, I think I would do it w/o the
modem being installed and seeing if then installing it would force XP to not
try to share IRQs between it and the video card. Of course make sure that
you do have XP drivers for both devices.

Replace the Voodoo 3 card. Nice card with Win 98 , but nothing but trouble
with XP. Been there , done that. No XP drivers. If problems don't improve ,
replace the ram. Jym
