System Crash

For the third time since August 1st when I return to my
computer after being gone for some time my log on screen
is present on my desktop. After I log on I receive the
following: THE SYSTEM HAS RECOVERED FROM A SERIOUS
ERROR. I then receive further information from Microsoft
Online Crash Analysis that a device driver installed on
my system caused the problem, but they cannot determine
the precise cause.

Since August 1st I have not installed any new hardware or
software. To resolve the issue I used system restore to
take my system back to prior to the first crash of August
1st to see if that would correct the problem, but the
system has crashed two more times since the restore. I
would really appreciate any help on locating or fixing
this problem so that my system does not continually crash.

Go to control panel, system and click on hardware tab then
click on device manager button. There, click the + next to
any device to see if there is a ? or ! next to it. If
so,click on that device and troubleshoot from there or
install new drivers for that device...Good luck.

I checked and there are no ! or ? marks listed next to
any items in the Device Manager, so what is next?

What does Event Viewer tell you? Are there any errors in
either System or Application Logs?

Hi, David.

Go to System Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Remove
the check from the box under System failure that says Automatically restart.

Next time you come back, instead of your log on screen you should see a BSOD
(Blue Screen of Death) full of cryptic codes. Copy those codes verbatim
into your next message and some guru (not me!) should be able to point you
in the right direction.
