System Configuration?

After "Run, "Msconfig", Startup tab, Win XP home edition:
Is there a list that provides the basic programs
necessary for running Windows?
I have 24 items running identified by HKLM, HKCU, common
startup or startup.
What happens if I disable all?
I would like to uncheck those not necessary that I can
not identify or disable all then add those I would like
to start at Startup.
Suggestions, point me to instructions?
Thanks, Wally

Here's a searchable list of start-up items to help you decide:

Hi Wally, it sounds like you have more running than you need. Here are a
few cautious ways to proceed.

1) First, write down the names of the processes listed there. Search your
HD for files named after these processes. Seeing where they are installed
on the HD if you can find them may help you figure out if they must load
right away or not.

2) If you are not sure, create a restore point before making any changes,
then uncheck one at a time and reboot. If something causes you a problem,
use the restore point then don't uncheck it again.

Generally, on a clean XP installation, there isn't much in the Startup tab.
Little of anything there, is usually "needed" for your computer to run.

But, as Hermes pointed out, better safe than sorry. Make sure you can boot
your computer into Safe Mode, if needed.
