System Configuration Utility

Hi,
If I run a command in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) I get the
following error: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to
change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to
make the specified change.

I am log on as Administrator, so this can't be the problem.

Could this problem be the results of HP printer drivers?

Hi Kevin

If you are running a McAfee antivirus product, that could be the cause.
Some other security programs such as the ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which
"lock down" the operating system can also do it. I believe there is an
option in ZA to turn this off.

If it is McAfee, you should find that even though you get the error, the
changes you make in msconfig *do* stick. There's a discussion and

Didn't you post this question yesterday, and it received several replies.
Why post again? Can you not find the previous post? If that's the case
search for it using Google Groups Advanced Search. Search on your name as
author in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

Better yet use a newsreader to access what are actually newsgroups instead
of the awful web interface. XP comes with Outlook Express which can be set
up for newsgroup access. Here is a link on how to do this.

It's best to stay in the same thread rather than creating a new one. As I
said in the other reply if you can't find a post search for it and better
yet ditch the web interface.

My answer was it was due to McAfee and how it works with msconfig.

The reason you're having such problems is that you are using the awful web
interface to read this newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
