Sysprep on SP2 - Default User profile

D

Dewg

In response to this thread, you can definately delete the
Administrator profile (directory) from under Documents and Settings
before imaging it. My systems are FAT32 and the SYSPREP.INF file has
a one-time command to run CONVERT to change the drive to NTFS on first
log-in.

So I sysprep - turn back on with a bootable DOS floppy or CD and
remove the Administrator folder. Then I image the drive.

When Mini-Setup launches, it has no Administrator profile to copy so
it skips that leaving the Default User profile alone.

Works like a charm!

Hello,
I would not delete the administrator profile, renaming the administrator
account would be a better idea.
Here is a hotfix article which makes the process optional. It defaults to
the old behavior with the unattended option to copy over the profile if you
want that done.

Darrell,

Is the next Windows XP service pack really going to contain this hotfix
like it says in the KB article? Previously you said "It's a change in
SP2 that was supposed to be in SP1" so I find it confusing that there
is a hotfix that will change the behavior back to pre-SP2.

D

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello George,
The default after installing the hotfix would be to revert back to SP1 or
RTM behavior with the unattended option to change so that the Administrator
option is copied over the Default User account. The change is so this
doesn't happen automatically which can break current deployment methods
that people are using. So yes the next service pack will automatically get
this change. There is some new behavior in that there will be unattended
options ot enable or disable this as desired as well.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Marshall,

I have some good news for you, we just released a fix that will go into
XPSP3 and SRSP1 that will allow the user to turn this functionality on and
off via the following entry in your sysprep.inf:
[Unattended]
UpdateServerProfileDirectory=1

a value of 1 will perform that Administrator to Default profile copy, any
other value will turn this functionality off.

Thanks

Hi.

I've been using sysprep to manage my Windows XP image since conception.
Every few months I update our "Template" image and create a new
Post-Sysprep
image with new applications and product updates just to lessen the load
once
machines are imaged. We also have very specific things we want set up in
the users' profiles, so we set that up under Default User beforehand.

The way that I've always created the Default User profile is to:

A) Create a Local User called "COMPANYNAME", login as that and make my
Start
Menu/Explorer/IE Settings changes.
B) Login as Local Admin
C) Remove customization from the COMPANYNAME user's profile folder, such
as
Desktop.INI files' OWNER=COMPANYNAME lines. This makes them be recreated
for new users logging into the system.
D) Using the System control panel, copy that user's profile to the Default
User profile, marked usable for Everyone.
E) Disable that local user account, Delete that user's profile, then
Sysprep-Reseal and ghost to the network.

This was working great. New users logging into the system post-sysprep
would get a perfectly configured user profile.

This morning I decided to update the Post-Sysprep image to SP2 to get our
QA
group going on testing the final code. Suddenly, the Default User's
profile
is being filled with items from the Local Administrator's user profile for
some reason. The OWNER=USERNAME lines are back into the DESKTOP.INI files
that I specifically cleared out of the Default User folder before imaging.
In fact, I can open the Ghost Image in Ghost Explorer and see for myself
that those lines are NOT THERE. Between mini-setup and userlogin
something
is copying Administrator's profile to Default User. This behavior is new
in
SP2. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Hi

Call for the hotfix mentioned here:

Changes in behavior of the SysPrep and RIPREP tools after you
install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=887816

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (887816) and ask for nothing more.

You will need to find the phone number from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

In the wizard, Select WinXP, and Basic, and then "It was purchased separately"

For USA, you end up here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer31

Use phone number 425-635-3311
