Sysprep.inf Problem

Using XP sp1, sysprep 2.0. I would like my ghosted PC to prompt for Computer
Name when first booting up...on my Pentium3 PC, I get prompted and put in my
own Computer Name and join the domain upon bootup. But the same sysprep.inf
file on my Pentium4 PC does not yield a prompt for Computer Name.

I can't get the sysprep.inf configured to do this. I've tried leaving
'Computer Name=' blank, I've tried several things. Any ideas? Thx.

John, I had the exact same problem and called MS tech support for a fix that
is working so far. BEFORE running Sysprep on the master machine, go into
regedit HKLM>System>CurrentControlSet>Services>Tcpip>Parameters and under the
"Hostname" and "NV Hostname" entries clear out anything populating the value
data. Then run Sysprep and it should now prompt you for the ComputerName.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. It's still is not prompting for the computer name, after
deleting the reg. entries you suggested. The 'Computer Name' line in the .inf
file is no longer there, based on the other post suggestion..neither has
helped. I've tried with an existing .inf file (modifying), and creating a new
one (and then clearing those reg. settings). Two clues that make me believe
something is just not happening right during sysprep.

- When I first boot-up, I get notified that 'A duplicate name esists in the
domain (even though there is no 'Computer Name' after boot-up).

- After first bootup, I also get a prompt saying 'Registry Recovery - One of
the files containing the systems Registry data had to be recovered by use of
a log or alt. copy. Recovery was successful'.

Any other ideas? Anyone? I'm doubting now that sysprep is actually
successful in re-creating the SID, and I still can't get prompted for the
Computer Name, so I can join the domain at first bootup.

Thx.

John, you may have already tried but the MS tech told me to use an illegal
chacater (^ or Shift+6) as the name (ComputerName=^) and that seemed to work
too. Try that with the reg hax and lemme know...

I tried that too, with no luck.

John, try this. It finally solved my issue.

Delete your C:\windows\system32\$winnt$.inf file before you run sysprep.
